We are already in our second week of solids with baby Gray! He is absolutely loving it, he is very food driven so the journey has been easy so far. Babies iron stores drop at around 6 months, which is why it is recommended to start serving high iron foods. This week we tried rice cereal that is fortified with iron at breakfast, I preload it onto a spoon for him and he feeds himself. It went well so we have been doing that every morning now in addition to introducing a new food to him at dinner time every second day!
Here is what we tried this week:
Day 9 & 10 – sweet potato
preparation: we prepared this two ways, the first was steamed. Skin removed, cut into “finger” slices, and steamed for 10 minutes, cooled but served warm.
The second was baked. Skin removed, cut into “finger” slices, tossed in 1 tbsp olive oil, baked at 400 degrees for 30 minutes, cooled but served warm
verdict: Grayson loved the taste although this was my least favourite food so far, it involved the most gagging and the texture seemed to be very “sticky” in his mouth
Day 11 & 12 – apple
preparation: peeled, cut into “finger” slices with crinkle cutter, steamed for 15 minutes, cooled and served cold
verdict: loved it, it was a bit mushy and harder to hold than other fruits but Grayson had lots of fun playing with it and still seemed to eat quite a bit
Day 13 & 14 – rice cereal
preparation: mixed with water according to package (I used the Gerber rice cereal with banana), pre loaded onto spoon and gave to baby to self feed
verdict: loved it, we eat this every morning now after his first bottle. It is quite messy but Grayson figured out how to hold the spoon immediately and most of it makes it to his mouth!
Day 15 & 16 – pear
preparation: fresh but very ripe, peeled, cut into “finger” slices with crinkle cutter
verdict: loved it
